With this third volume the Ariel Quartet brings its complete Beethoven string quartet cycle on Orchid Classics to a close, turning to the five late quartets that the composer wrote in the final years of his life. Composed after the Ninth Symphony, when Beethoven was completely deaf, Opp. 127, 130, 131, 132 and 135 broke every convention of the genre: movements multiply and change order, fugue sits beside folk-like dance, and moments of profound stillness give way to wild humour. Highlights include the seven continuous movements of Op. 131, the 'Heiliger Dankgesang' at the heart of Op. 132, and the playful 'Muss es sein? Es muss sein!' that rounds off Op. 135. These works have long been regarded as a summit of chamber music, and the Ariel Quartet meets them with the insight and unity of an ensemble that has played together for over two decades.
