T'as voulu voir Jacques Brel et on a vu…
Catalog Number: PTY2026002D
Cellist Camille Seghers and pianist Alexis Thibaut de Maisières reimagine 13 Jacques Brel songs, each woven with a classical work — Ravel, Schubert, Beethoven, Chopin — that could have been its source. Brel's voice reborn in strings.
Camille Seghers and Alexis Thibaut de Maisières meet Jacques Brel halfway between chanson and classical music on this inventive Paraty release. The concept is elegantly paradoxical: Brel and his pianist Gérard Jouannest began from musical impulses and built songs outward; arranger Thibaut de Maisières reversed the process, searching inside each song for the classical work that might have sparked it. The result pairs thirteen Brel songs with pieces by Ravel, Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Offenbach, Rachmaninov, Chostakovitch, Piazzolla, Rimski-Korsakov, de Falla and Johann Strauss II — each classical model serving as the structural and expressive DNA of its arrangement. "Ne me quitte pas" unfolds through Schubert's Auf dem Wasser zu singen; "Les Désespérés" is built on Ravel's Piano Concerto in G, the very piece that inspired its creation when Jouannest played it during a rehearsal warm-up; "Amsterdam" becomes a petite suite for solo cello. The cello avoids any attempt to imitate Brel's inimitable voice, finding instead its own expressive truth. Recorded at Arsonic, Mons in November 2025 on a Joseph Hel 1894 cello and a Yamaha S6 grand piano.
