The Minnesota Orchestra and its music director Thomas Søndergård turn to the singular sound world of Thomas Adès, pairing two of his most compelling orchestral scores: the world-premiere recording of The Exterminating Angel Symphony and the Violin Concerto, with soloist Leila Josefowicz. Across both works, Adès merges intellectual rigour with raw emotional immediacy, conjuring radiant, unsettling orchestral textures that evoke a surreal musical landscape. Josefowicz brings fierce expressivity and precision to the Violin Concerto, while the orchestra navigates the volatile energy of The Exterminating Angel Symphony with gripping intensity, together spanning the cinematic drama and virtuosic intimacy of Adès's artistry. The recording marks the PENTATONE debut of both the Minnesota Orchestra and Leila Josefowicz; Søndergård himself previously appeared on the label's 2018 recording of Lutosławski and Dutilleux cello concertos with Johannes Moser and the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin.
