The Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and its chief conductor Karina Canellakis continue their Bartók cycle with the composer's only opera, Duke Bluebeard's Castle, starring mezzo-soprano Rinat Shaham as Judith and bass-baritone Gábor Bretz as Bluebeard. With just two singers and a castle of seven mysterious doors, the opera unfolds as a psychological thriller of suspense and intense emotion. Canellakis and the orchestra previously earned a Grammy nomination for their recording of Bartók's Concerto for Orchestra and Four Orchestral Pieces, praised by BBC Music Magazine as 'enticing and brilliantly engineered' and by Gramophone for painting 'soundscapes with both finesse and fire.' For Canellakis, this opera is, in her words, an homage to life's brevity and fleeting beauty. Shaham and Bretz, both in demand at the world's leading opera houses, bring extensive experience in these roles, continuing a Bartók series that began with the orchestra's 2023 recording of the Concerto for Orchestra.
