Following their rave-reviewed 2025 recording of Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 2, Francesco Piemontesi, conductor Manfred Honeck and the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig turn to the composer's Piano Concerto No. 1 - a work of striking emotional force and symphonic grandeur. Composed in the aftermath of Robert Schumann's collapse, it reflects the young Brahms' struggle for artistic identity, from its monumental, Beethovenian opening to a slow movement often heard as a portrait of Clara Schumann.
