This album presents Johannes Brahms’s monumental Piano Concerto No. 2 and the intimate Three Intermezzi, Op. 117. Pianist Francesco Piemontesi joins the Gewandhausorchester under Manfred Honeck in a live Leipzig performance that reveals both the concerto’s grandeur—part symphony, part chamber music—and the intermezzi’s late, personal lyricism. Together, these works show Brahms at his most expansive and most inward.
This album presents Johannes Brahms’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in B-flat major, Op. 83, performed by Francesco Piemontesi with the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig conducted by Manfred Honeck, alongside the Three Intermezzi, Op. 117. The concerto, completed in 1881, is among Brahms’s most majestic creations: a fusion of symphonic scope and pianistic virtuosity, alternating between sweeping drama, intimate dialogue, and radiant lyricism. The performance, recorded live at the historic Gewandhaus, captures its full grandeur and delicacy. In contrast, the Intermezzi, composed a decade later, reflect Brahms’s private world—“the lullabies of my sorrows,” he called them—music of deep melancholy, poise, and tenderness. Together, these works form a portrait of Brahms both as the master of vast orchestral architecture and as a composer of profoundly personal expression.
