Clarinettist Daniel Ottensamer presents Johannes Brahms' two celebrated clarinet sonatas reworked for clarinet and orchestra by cellist and arranger Stephan Koncz, who also conducts the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin on this recording. Koncz's orchestrations lift these masterful chamber works out of their original intimate setting and into a new symphonic light, realising an idea the two musicians had nurtured since their student days. Brahms' well-known sonatas are joined by a hidden gem, Walter Rabl's clarinet quartet, winner of a prestigious competition Brahms himself judged. Pianist Christoph Traxler and Berlin Philharmonic concertmaster Noah Bendix-Balgley join Ottensamer for the performance, while Koncz sets down his baton for the cello, offering a fascinating view into the rich musical world of late nineteenth-century Vienna. Ottensamer, principal clarinettist of the Vienna Philharmonic, is among today's most celebrated clarinettists, while Koncz, a cellist of the Berlin Philharmonic, divides his career between performing, conducting, and composing. All performers make their PENTATONE debut with this recording.
