Dvořák's Legends and Slavonic Rhapsodies, recorded here by the Czech Philharmonic's Principal Guest Conductor Tomáš Netopil, mark the orchestra's fourth release devoted to Czech composers as part of 2024's Year of Czech Music. Dvořák wrote his Slavonic Rhapsodies shortly before the Slavonic Dances that brought him international fame, and the two sets share colourful orchestration and appealing folk-dance melodies, though the Rhapsodies unfold in more expansive, ambitious forms. The Legends are no less inventive: scored for a smaller orchestra, they carry a more intimate, introspective character. These lesser-known gems receive a glowing, idiomatic reading from an orchestra widely regarded as the finest interpreter of this repertoire. The recording continues the Czech Philharmonic's PENTATONE series under Chief Conductor Semyon Bychkov, which includes an ongoing Mahler cycle and recordings of Smetana's Má Vlast and Dvořák's Symphonies Nos. 7, 8 & 9, and marks Netopil's PENTATONE debut.
