Douglas Moore's Giants in the Earth won the 1951 Pulitzer Prize for Music. Based on O. E. Rølvaag's celebrated novel, it follows Norwegian immigrants struggling to build a life on the harsh South Dakota prairie in the 1870s. This recording features the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra and Chorus conducted by Delta David Gier, fittingly captured in the very landscape the opera portrays. Moore's warm, folk-inflected American idiom vividly evokes the hardship, faith and endurance of the pioneer experience.
