Igor Stravinsky: Late Works
Cappella Amsterdam, led by chief conductor Daniel Reuss, joins the Noord Nederlands Orkest to explore Igor Stravinsky's late serial works: In Memoriam Dylan Thomas (1954), Threni (1958), Introitus (1965), and Requiem Canticles (1966). Together these pieces form a spiritually charged cycle marking the final period of Stravinsky's creative life, rendered here with clarity and devotion. Rather than reading Stravinsky's adoption of twelve-tone technique as a break with his neoclassical past, the performance leans into the composer's own view of it as an inner metamorphosis — a disciplined quest for order and clarity rather than an aesthetic conversion. The Igor Stravinsky Foundation, in a statement prepared for this release, describes the composer's late serial rules as a means of giving form to asceticism, echoing his own belief that art becomes freer the more it is controlled and worked over. Through this demanding, lucid interpretation, Reuss and his musicians offer a rare testimony to a composer who, even at the end of his life, sought reconciliation rather than rupture.
