The Kölner Akademie, directed by Michael Alexander Willens, presents J.S. Bach's four Kyrie–Gloria Masses, BWV 233–236, composed during the 1730s at a moment of remarkable artistic consolidation for the composer. Drawing largely on his finest cantata movements, Bach reworked earlier material with refined counterpoint, richer orchestration, and close attention to the Latin text, expanding arias and blending older settings with newly imagined timbres. Long overshadowed by the Mass in B minor, these so-called Lutheran Masses emerge here as brilliant, self-sufficient creations, each shaped by its own structural logic and emotional character.
