The Czech Philharmonic and its Chief Conductor Semyon Bychkov continue their acclaimed Mahler cycle with the composer's monumental Third Symphony, joined by mezzo-soprano Catriona Morison, the Prague Philharmonic Choir, and Pueri Gaudentes. Mahler weaves a text from Nietzsche's Also sprach Zarathustra together with folk-song inspirations from Des Knaben Wunderhorn, building toward a serene close in the final Adagio. Bychkov calls this, the longest of Mahler's symphonies, his 'least hysterical' music, and its roots for him reach back to childhood, when he first sang it as a ten-year-old choirboy. The recording continues the orchestra's ongoing Mahler cycle with Bychkov, following the First, Second, Fourth and Fifth Symphonies, alongside their acclaimed accounts of Smetana's Má Vlast and Dvořák's Seventh, Eighth and Ninth Symphonies.
