On Metanoia, pianist Yulianna Avdeeva traces Liszt's remarkable evolution from virtuoso showman to modernist visionary. At its centre stands the great Piano Sonata in B minor, set against the stark, searching late works – among them La lugubre gondola II, Nuages gris and Csárdás macabre – in which bold harmonic experiment, compressed forms and strikingly dissonant sonorities look ahead to the twentieth century and to composers such as Bartók and Debussy. More than a display of technique, the programme follows Liszt's deepening meditation on mortality, faith and the human condition. Recorded at the Tippet Rise Art Center in Montana, it is a portrait of a composer reinventing himself.
