Mozart Horn Concertos
Catalog Number: PTC5187608D
The gold standard of the horn repertoire, played by a soloist who has lived with them for nearly twenty years: Ben Goldscheider and the Münchener Kammerorchester present Mozart's four horn concertos in reverse order, with cadenzas by Andreas Staier.
Mozart wrote his horn concertos for Joseph Leutgeb, a Salzburg horn player and one of his oldest friends – and the butt of many affectionate jokes scribbled into the manuscripts, from 'donkey, ox and clown' to a running commentary urging on the soloist in the First Concerto's finale. Behind the teasing lies some of Mozart's most gratefully written music, with long lyrical lines, hunting-style rondos and, in the Third and Fourth Concertos, a dramatic flair that recalls his piano concertos and the world of Figaro. British horn player Ben Goldscheider, who first played K. 495 as a soloist at both the Royal Albert Hall and the Berlin Philharmonie, has chosen to present the concertos in reverse order, starting with the grand Fourth and ending with the D major First Concerto. He is joined by the Münchener Kammerorchester, led by concertmaster Susanne von Gutzeit, and plays cadenzas and lead-ins by Andreas Staier. Recorded in Munich in December 2025.
