With Plucked Bach III, Alon Sariel brings his acclaimed Bach cycle to a close, deepening a sound world defined by refinement and inward focus. This final volume introduces new colours to the series: the Ottoman bağlama, a relative of the lute, and a rare Tuscan-type mandola whose octave-lower tuning lends Bach's Third Cello Suite a dark, velvety resonance, while the archlute frames the programme at its opening and close. Sariel's playing reveals Bach's writing as at once architecturally precise and deeply tactile, unfolding the album as a sequence of finely balanced reflections rather than a single dramatic arc. Familiar keyboard, violin, and cello works, including the Prelude from the Well-Tempered Clavier and the Second Violin Partita's Chaconne, sit alongside rarer pieces by Westhoff and Matteis, all transformed by the intimacy of plucked strings. Plucked Bach III continues Sariel's ongoing PENTATONE collaboration, following the earlier volumes of the trilogy, Vienna Mandolin Stories (2025), and the EP Schubert's Mandolin (2024).
