Pianist Yulianna Avdeeva presents Shostakovich's 24 Preludes and Fugues, Op. 87, a work that harks back to Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier and ranks among the most demanding cycles in the piano repertoire. Rarely performed in its entirety, the complete opus places Avdeeva among a select group of pianists who have taken on the challenge. The recording is completed by an alternative Prelude and Fugue in C-sharp minor: Shostakovich sketched an initial prelude in this key in 1950 before ultimately using different material for Op. 87, and the fragment lay in the composer's Moscow archive until its rediscovery in 2005 by Shostakovich scholar Olga Digonskaya. Composer and biographer Krzysztof Meyer completed the prelude and added his own fugue in 2019, giving Avdeeva's recording a fascinating extra dimension. She returns to PENTATONE following her acclaimed label debut, Resilience (2023), and Chopin: Voyage (2024).
