This double album offers a testimony to Igor Stravinsky's overwhelming musical legacy, spanning every phase of a seven-decade career in which he continually reinvented his style and absorbed the century's most important musical trends. The programme opens with one of the first recordings of the recently rediscovered Funeral Song (1909), composed as a tribute to his teacher Rimsky-Korsakov, before moving to the raw yet meticulously refined Rite of Spring (1913), the work that caused a scandal at its Paris premiere and instantly made Stravinsky a star. His Neoclassical period is represented by Jeu de cartes (1937) and the Concerto in D (1947), while Agon (1957) marks his turn toward Schoenberg's serialism. This wide-ranging repertoire is performed by the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg and its Music Director Gustavo Gimeno, continuing their acclaimed PENTATONE series of composer portraits, which has already featured monographs devoted to Shostakovich, Bruckner, Ravel, and Mahler.
