Sur is Argentine mezzo-soprano Daniela Mack's deeply personal debut on PENTATONE - a homecoming shaped by memory, identity and the enduring pull of Buenos Aires. The album traces her lifelong love of Astor Piazzolla, whose colour, grit and intensity first reached her from the back seat of her father's car and never let go. Mack is joined by bandoneonist and composer JP Jofre and his quintet - violin, cello, piano, double bass and bandoneon - whose luminous arrangements honour Piazzolla's originals while adding a distinctive, contemporary voice. The programme gathers Piazzolla classics, from Vuelvo al Sur and Yo Soy Maria to Oblivion and Balada Para mi Muerte, alongside Jofre's own tender Dulces Suenos, a piece he now shares with a new generation. Bringing together classical finesse and the raw immediacy of tango, Mack unfolds each song as an intimate vignette, at once nostalgic and vividly alive - music that, in its depth and universality, speaks to all.
