The Leipzig Collegium Musicum Vol. 1: Music before Bach
Catalog Number: PTC5187592D
Reinhard Goebel and the Neues Bachisches Collegium Musicum revive the sound of Leipzig's music-making societies before Bach — the collegia musica that would grow into the Gewandhaus Orchestra. Vibrant works by Fasch, Heinichen, Graupner and more.
With this first volume of a new series, Reinhard Goebel and the Neues Bachisches Collegium Musicum explore the Leipzig collegia musica — the assemblies of professional and student musicians who gathered to make music in the city's coffee houses and public rooms long before Johann Sebastian Bach directed his own. These societies, celebrated in Zedler's Universal-Lexicon of 1737, laid the foundations for the 'Great Concert' of 1743 and, ultimately, the Gewandhaus Orchestra. The programme gathers colourful orchestral music from the generation before Bach by Johann Friedrich Fasch, Johann Beer, Johann David Heinichen, Georg Melchior Hoffmann and Christoph Graupner. Soloists include Max Volbers on recorder and Clemens Röger on horn. Performed on period instruments with Goebel's characteristic drive and precision, it restores a vivid chapter of Leipzig's musical life to the concert stage.
