Of the more than 20 pieces he composed for organ solo, this Toccata in B minor is one of three of his organ works still played frequently today. This work is dedicated by the composer to the composer of the next track in this album: Clarence Eddy ******* TRACK 02 Clarence Eddy 1851-1937 Prelude and Fugue in A minor [1882] Clarence Eddy (1851-1937) is the sole American organist-composer represented in this program. His name is generally obscure today. His musical studies were taken in his native New England, in Hartford, Connecticut and Berlin, Germany, after which he settled in Chicago, as organist of First Congregational Church in Chicago (1874-76), and as organist and choirmaster of the First Presbyterian Church in Chicago (1876-1893). Mr. Eddy commanded a huge concert organ repertoire and his advanced technical skill at the organ became legendary as he toured widely with over 100 organ recitals. He composed but a few original organ works during the 1880s. His Prelude and Fugue in A minor was published in 1882 by Edward Schuberth and Company. The meticulous counterpoint in the Prelude of this work is a testimony to his German musical training as well as to his own well-maintained playing technique. In 1902, Clarence Eddy was the dedicatory recitalist of the Lyon & Healy pipe organ at the Basilica of Our Lady of Sorrows. ******* TRACK 03 Charles-Marie Widor 1844-1937
Toccata from Organ Symphony #5 in F, Op. 42 #1 [c. 1865] Like Franck, Widor also arrived in Paris in the mid 19th century to build a music career, and he had ample opportunity to experience first-hand the then new style of symphonic-proportioned pipe organs as were being built by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll. Widor commanded Mr. Cavaillé-Coll’s magnum opus pipe organ, with its 100 stops, distributed over 5 manuals and pedal, at the Parisian church of Saint-Sulpice. Although Widor’s tenure as organist at Saint-Sulpice was from 1862 through 1933, Widor was never officially appointed as organist; rather, he held his Saint-Sulpice post as a temporary substitute for over six decades. Over a term of 40 years, Widor composed and published ten organ symphonies. The Toccata from his Fifth Symphony has become the best-known organ solo piece in history. It is often played as a wedding recessional or as the concluding postlude at Christmas Midnight Mass.
