Charpentier: Actéon
Catalog Number: RIC487
Nicolas Achten and Scherzi Musicali perform both of Charpentier's own versions of Acteon side by side - the 1684 original and its autumn revision - compressing Ovid's tragedy of Actaeon into a compact, dramatically charged Baroque masterpiece.
Marc-Antoine Charpentier's Acteon, composed in 1684 for the household of Mademoiselle de Guise, compresses the tragedy of Ovid's hunter-turned-stag into a miniature tragedie lyrique for a handful of singers and instrumentalists. This recording, led by harpsichordist and director Nicolas Achten with his ensemble Scherzi Musicali, presents both of Charpentier's own versions of the work: the original Acteon and its autumn revision, Acteon change en biche, in which the title role passes from tenor to soprano. Juno's vengeful intervention - absent from Ovid but central to Charpentier's telling - turns an innocent man into collateral damage in a divine feud, a cruel moral rendered with striking dramatic economy. Recorded on period instruments, the album offers a rare opportunity to compare both faces of this compact Baroque tragedy.
