Monteverdi's Vespro della beata Vergine (1610) is among the most ambitious and dazzling sacred works of its age, fusing ancient plainchant with virtuosic solo writing, double choirs and brilliant instrumental sonatas. Lambert Colson leads his ensemble InAlto — voices, cornetts, sackbuts, strings and continuo — joined by the Cappella di San Petronio di Bologna for the Gregorian chant. Recorded in 2025 in the Basilica di Santa Barbara in Mantua, the very church of Monteverdi's Gonzaga patrons, the performance restores the work to its original acoustic and ceremonial splendour.
