The viola da gamba enjoyed real popularity in seventeenth-century Germany, both as the violin's dialogue partner and as a solo voice with a repertoire of its own. Johann Michael Nicolai spent most of his career in the service of the Stuttgart court, leaving a body of works for ensembles of two or three violas da gamba. On this release the ensemble L'Achéron presents his complete sonatas and suites – music in which the spirit of the Italian sonata is elegantly combined with the French suite.
