Vox Luminis and Lionel Meunier turn to Roland de Lassus, master of the late Renaissance, in his two settings of the Mass for the Dead — one for four voices, one for five. Sung one voice per part, these Requiems glow with the intimacy and gravity of a private farewell.
Roland de Lassus: Requiem
The Renaissance master Roland de Lassus (1532–1594) left two settings of the Mass for the Dead, and Vox Luminis brings both together here: the four-voice Officium pro omnibus fidelibus defunctis, complete with its rarely heard Dies irae, and the five-voice Missa pro defunctis. Under Lionel Meunier, the ensemble sings one voice to a part, lending Lassus's dark, richly woven polyphony a hushed and deeply human intimacy. From the opening Requiem aeternam to the final Lux aeterna, this is music of consolation and quiet grandeur, recorded in the warm acoustic of the église Saint-Rémi at Franc-Waret.
