Scarlatti: Il trionfo della Grazia
Catalog Number: RIC490
Mary Magdalene must choose between the pleasures of youth and the path of penitence. Alessandro Scarlatti's early oratorio Il trionfo della Grazia was a triumph in 1685 Rome, and Ensemble Céladon brings its vivid drama and beautiful arias to life.
Alessandro Scarlatti composed Il trionfo della Grazia, also known as La Maddalena penitente, during his early years in Rome, to a libretto by Cardinal Benedetto Pamphili. First performed in 1685 before six cardinals and the cream of Roman musical society, it was a resounding success and was revived for years afterwards in Modena, Florence, Bologna, Mantua and Vienna. The oratorio stages the inner struggle of Mary Magdalene, torn between Youth, who urges her to enjoy life's pleasures, and Penitence, who calls her to a life devoted to God. Scarlatti's music brings the allegory to life through expressive recitatives, vivid arias and duets, and a sinfonia depicting the motion of the heavens. Ensemble Céladon, directed by countertenor Paulin Bündgen, performs with sopranos Marie-Frédérique Girod and Lise Viricel in a recording made in Lyon in 2026.
