Sulla piazza
Catalog Number: RIC494
A night out in 16th-century Venice with a Renaissance violin consort. La Capriola's debut wanders from St Mark's Basilica to fashionable salons and rowdy taverns, with music by Willaert, Rore, the Gabrielis and Bendusi.
Founded in 2021, Consort La Capriola is dedicated to reviving the 16th-century violin consort – the Renaissance ancestor of the string quartet, which recent research has shown to be central to the musical life of the time. Their first album imagines an evening around St Mark's Square: dances by Francesco Bendusi under the arcades, sacred music by Adrian Willaert in the basilica, madrigals by Cipriano de Rore in elegant residences, and risqué villanelles in the taverns until daybreak. Voice, a family of soprano, alto, tenor and bass violins and a harp combine in ever-changing textures, with Odile Édouard joining the ensemble. The musicians play a consort of seven violins built specially for them by luthier Jean-Paul Boury, and explore historical practices such as playing standing, varied bow holds and collective ornamentation.
