Weber: Der Freischütz arrangirt in Harmoniemusik
Catalog Number: RIC489
In 2026, the bicentenary of Weber's death, the period-instrument ensemble WOLF revisits Der Freischütz through Karl Flachs's 1825 Harmoniemusik arrangement — highlights of the beloved Romantic opera recast with brilliance for a colourful classical wind ensemble.
Marking the 2026 bicentenary of Carl Maria von Weber's death, the period-instrument ensemble WOLF presents Der Freischütz in a Harmoniemusik arrangement made by the Berlin musician Karl Flachs and published in 1825. Flachs distilled Weber's richly orchestrated Romantic opera — overture, choruses and arias alike — for a nine-piece wind ensemble, adding a flute to the classic octet of oboes, clarinets, horns and bassoons, and ingeniously passing the vocal lines from one instrument to another. The programme is completed by two of Weber's own works for wind sextet: the rediscovered Adagio and Rondo and a Waltz drawn from his Lied Maienblümlein, so schön. Played on historical instruments, this recording captures the charm and brio of a once-flourishing arranging tradition.
