Mondrian - 21st-Century Harpsichord Concerti
After the concertos of de Falla, Poulenc and Martinů in the 1920s and 30s, the harpsichord concerto lay largely dormant for almost a century. This album presents three new works composed between 2018 and 2023 for Mahan Esfahani. Caroline Shaw's Concerto for Harpsichord and Strings nods to the Baroque model, while Gary Carpenter's Mondrian takes its inspiration from the Dutch painter. Gavin Bryars' concerto 'Busoni's Chickering' is named after the Dolmetsch-supervised harpsichord owned by Ferruccio Busoni. Esfahani is joined by Ensemble 10/10 under Clark Rundell and by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra under Andrew Manze.
