The Chopin I Love

The Chopin I Love
For his latest SOMM release, the distinguished British pianist Peter Donohoe — joint winner of the 1982 International Tchaikovsky Competition — turns to a composer who has accompanied him since childhood. The album's title, The Chopin I Love, is borrowed from a formative Arthur Rubinstein LP of his youth, and the programme gathers pieces that have long resonated with him while spanning some of the most demanding music ever written for the piano. At its heart stand the complete Preludes, Op. 28 — one in every key — played here as a continuous cycle, alongside the more expansive C sharp minor Prelude, Op. 45. Donohoe also explores two late masterpieces, the gently rocking Barcarolle, Op. 60 and the harmonically searching Polonaise-Fantaisie, Op. 61, before reaching the intimate 2 Nocturnes, Op. 62, Chopin's final essays in the form. The recital closes with the light-hearted 3 Écossaises, Op. 72 No. 3 — among the very first pieces Donohoe came to know and seminal to his lifelong love of the composer. It follows his acclaimed SOMM accounts of Chopin's Second and Third Sonatas and the Waltzes.
