Fusions
Catalog Number: SOMMCD_0724
Pianist Nikolay Medvedev brings together the jazz-inflected worlds of Gershwin and Kapustin alongside Earl Wild's brilliant transcriptions — a programme that bridges the classical and popular imagination in style.
SOMM Recordings' Fusions is built around the shared jazz DNA of George Gershwin and Nikolai Kapustin — two pianist-composers born thirty years apart whose music straddles the classical and popular worlds. Kapustin, born in 1937 (the year of Gershwin's death), spent decades writing jazz-inflected concert music that only reached international ears in the early 2000s; this recording makes a compelling case for his place alongside Gershwin in the jazz-classical crossover repertoire. Earl Wild — one of the greatest American pianists of the 20th century — contributes his own brilliant transcriptions to the mix. Award-winning pianist Nikolay Medvedev, praised by BBC Music Magazine as 'a pianist with poise and precision', brings technical command and idiomatic flair to the entire programme.
