The Mira Ensemble makes its debut with this disc devoted to the partsongs for upper voices by Herbert Howells (1892–1983) — a substantial but little-known part of his output. Founded in 2025 and directed by Tom Edney, the ensemble brings together professional singers from across the UK; they are joined by pianist Nick Salwey, long associated with BBC Radio 3 and with leading music education at Winchester College. Every track on the disc is a premiere recording, shedding new light on the lyrical, harmonically rich pastoral writing that Howells cultivated alongside his celebrated organ music and large choral works. This is a revelatory disc for anyone who thought they knew Howells.
