Ture Rangstrom's Kronbruden (The Crown Bride), based on August Strindberg's play, remains one of the most frequently staged and best-loved of all Swedish operas. Set among rural folk, this four-act tragedy of love, guilt and reconciliation combines French Impressionist harmonic colour with melodies steeped in Swedish tradition, nowhere more memorably than in the eerie songs of the water-spirit Neck. This recording forms the twelfth instalment in the acclaimed Romantic Opera in Sweden series and was captured live during concert performances on the main stage of the Gothenburg Opera in February 2017. Soprano Elisabet Strid leads the cast as Kersti, with Markus Pettersson as Mats, alongside Katarina Karneus, Maria Streijffert, Ake Zetterstrom and Mattias Ermedahl. The orchestra and youth chorus of the Gothenburg Opera perform under conductor David Bjorkman, bringing Rangstrom's richly atmospheric score vividly to life.
