Romantic Sonatas for Violin and Piano
Catalog Number: CDA1881
Brothers Hans and Per Enflo - violinist and pianist, the latter also a celebrated mathematician - revive three neglected Swedish Romantic sonatas, including a premiere by Svante Sjoberg, alongside Fryklof's Sonata alla leggenda and Tegner's sonata.
Brothers Hans Enflo (violin) and Per Enflo (piano) - the latter also renowned as the mathematician who solved the invariant subspace problem - devote this recording to three overlooked Swedish Romantic violin sonatas. Svante Sjoberg's sonata, unpublished since 1899 and appearing here in its first recording, reveals an original harmonic voice shaped by studies with Max Bruch in Berlin. Harald Fryklof's Sonata alla leggenda, the best-known work on the disc, unfolds in a mysterious four-movement arc composed just after the First World War, while Alice Tegner - famous chiefly as a beloved composer of children's songs - contributes a sonata of immediate charm indebted to Mendelssohn and Gade. Recorded by two brothers who have played chamber music together since childhood, the album restores three overlooked corners of Swedish repertoire to the concert stage.
