Hear Alban Berg become Alban Berg. The first volume of his complete songs traces his path from the late-Romantic Jugendlieder of a self-taught teenager to the Four Songs Op. 2, where the young pupil of Schoenberg leaves tonality behind.
Samtliche Lieder vol.1 - Complete songs vol.1
This first volume of Alban Berg's complete songs covers the decade from 1901 to 1910, documenting his entire development as a composer. The 23 Jugendlieder were written between the ages of sixteen and nineteen, before Berg began studying with Arnold Schoenberg, and set texts by Goethe, Heine, Eichendorff, Rückert, Rilke and Ibsen alongside poems by friends. Even here, the piano's low register, carefully measured silences and eloquent piano postludes point towards the mature composer. The program concludes with the Piano Sonata Op. 1 and the Four Songs Op. 2, in which Berg finally abandons tonality. Presented in chronological order, the songs are performed by Duo DAS LIED – soprano Barbara Costa and pianist Gianluca Di Donato – recorded in Milan in 2026.
