Renowned Viola da gamba virtuoso Maddalena Del Gobbo invites listeners on a spellbinding musical journey with her new album Maddalena in Wonderland, inspired by Lewis Carroll’s timeless tale Alice in Wonderland. Just as Alice follows the White Rabbit into a realm of wonder and disorientation, Del Gobbo leads us through baroque elegance, romantic depth, and contemporary color palettes—each track a new “room” in her sonic fantasy. Drawing from five centuries of repertoire, the program features masterworks by Tobias Hume, Georg Philipp Telemann, Antoine Forqueray, Marin Marais, Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe, Carl Friedrich Abel, and John Dowland. Interwoven are Del Gobbo’s own arrangements, including her poignant reimagining of Dowland’s “Time Stands Still,” and the world premiere recording of Suite du thé by Spanish composer Arti Sarró—an evocative work he composed expressly for her. In a personal homage, the album closes with two cello-and-piano pieces dedicated to her late father. Having rekindled her love of the cello in his final years, this intimate finale symbolizes both the end of a journey and the promise of renewal.
