D. Scarlatti: Complete Piano Sonatas Vol. 13
Catalog Number: TACET283DIG
Christoph Ullrich's marathon through all 555 Scarlatti sonatas – a pianist's Iron Man spread over 17 years – reaches Volume 13 with no sign of fatigue: trills, octaves, improvised repeats and switched hands, all as fresh as on day one.
D. Scarlatti: Complete Piano Sonatas Vol. 13
Volume 13 of Christoph Ullrich's complete recording of Domenico Scarlatti's keyboard sonatas continues one of the most ambitious projects in the piano catalogue: all 555 sonatas, recorded on a Steinway D over some 17 years. Each volume takes around five days in the studio, and the physical stamina involved has been compared to an endurance race. Yet Ullrich never simply plays it safe. In the inventive spirit of the composer, he adds trills and octaves, varies or ornaments the repeats as the music invites, and even redistributes passages between the hands. The result is playing of striking freshness, where a late sonata sounds as vivid as the very first – and a series that reveals ever more of the wit, joy and melancholy in Scarlatti's seemingly inexhaustible output.
