This anthology traces Italian vocal chamber music across the transition from the nineteenth to the twentieth century, sung by baritone Matteo Mencarelli with Filippo Farinelli at the piano. The programme is bound together by its poetry, drawing on texts that range from Dante and Gabriele D'Annunzio to nineteenth-century German verse and the Neapolitan poetess Laura Beatrice Mancini-Oliva. Among its discoveries is a world premiere recording of songs by Francesco Morlacchi. Together the selections show Italian composers seeking emancipation from the dominance of operatic melodrama and realigning their vocal chamber music with the wider European lied tradition.
