Weber: Sonate à mandolino e basso
Francesco Weber - an Italian lutenist, theorbist and mandolinist despite his German surname - spent most of his career in England, where he died in 1751. His twelve sonatas form one of the richest surviving collections of music for the baroque mandolino, an instrument preserved in only a handful of examples. This recording uses a five-course mandolin built in Genoa in 1717 by Andrea Weber - the only surviving instrument by that maker, and, extraordinarily, the composer's father. Recently rediscovered in a private collection and unknown even to early-mandolin specialists, it makes this disc a rare case of a composer's music performed on an instrument crafted by his own father.
