Ustvolskaya: Symphony No. 5 – Poulenc: La voix humaine

Ustvolskaya: Symphony No. 5 – Poulenc: La voix humaine
Recorded live at Severance Music Center, this release from The Cleveland Orchestra under Music Director Franz Welser-Möst brings together two intensely personal works on the theme of reconciliation. Galina Ustvolskaya's Symphony No. 5, "Amen" is a stark, ritualistic setting of the Lord's Prayer for a small ensemble and reciter, here Tony F. Sias. Francis Poulenc's La voix humaine (1958), on a text by Jean Cocteau, is a one-act opera for solo soprano — Sarah Aristidou — overheard during a final telephone call to the lover who has abandoned her. Together they make a gripping study of faith, loss and the human voice at its most exposed.
