Cedric Thorpe Davie: Orchestral Music, Vol. 1
Catalog Number: TOCC_0593
Cedric Thorpe Davie (1913–83) was a mainstay of Scottish musical life, yet his concert works are virtually unknown. These five first recordings reveal a natural melodic gift, rooted in Sibelius and Vaughan Williams but with a distinctly Scottish accent.
For the middle decades of the twentieth century, Cedric Thorpe Davie (1913–83) was a mainstay of musical life in Scotland – as teacher, administrator, choral director and, above all, composer. A pupil of Vaughan Williams who also studied with Kodály and made a pilgrimage to Sibelius in Finland, he spent three decades as the presiding musical spirit of the University of St Andrews, and his many film and theatre scores – not least for the landmark 1948 Edinburgh Festival production of Ane Satyre of the Thrie Estaites – brought him a wide audience. His orchestral works for the concert hall, by contrast, fell out of favour as tonal music lost ground in the 1960s. This first volume presents five of them in their first recordings: the Festal Overture, the Symphony in C major, the Diversions on a Tune by Dr Arne, the Solemn Music from King Lear and the Fantasia No. 1 on Four Scottish Tunes. Fittingly, they are played by the St Andrews Chamber Orchestra – the ensemble Davie himself founded – under Bede Williams, revealing music of fluent craftsmanship and warm melodic appeal, written to give pleasure to players and listeners alike.
