Dulcis Memoria - Organ Music from the Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth
Catalog Number: TXA26216
Organ music from the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth around 1600, played on the remarkably preserved Renaissance organ in Uttum. Alina Rotaru uncovers dances, fantasias and song intabulations from tablatures in Lublin, Gdańsk, Vilnius and beyond.
Around 1600, Hanseatic trade carried North German organ-building ideas as far as Gdańsk and Vilnius, while the Polish-Lithuanian court – especially under the music-loving Sigismund III Vasa – attracted musicians from Italy and across Europe. Alina Rotaru brings this cosmopolitan world to life on the Renaissance organ in Uttum, whose bright, transparent sound has close parallels in surviving 17th-century instruments in Poland and Lithuania. The programme draws on sources such as the Lublin tablature, the Danzig tablature and the Sapieha album, with pieces by Petrus de Drusina, Hans Leo Hassler, Diomedes Cato, Giovanni Picchi and Johannes Caioni alongside anonymous dances, fantasias and keyboard settings of vocal works by Lassus, Vecchi and others. The title refers to the famous chanson Doulce memoire, heard here in two different keyboard versions.
