Kazuko Hara’s Prelude, Aria, and Toccata for Guitar (1971) is a three-movement solo work in which Japanese lyricism meets meticulous structural design and modern sonorities. Hiroshi Hara’s Elegy for Guitar (1968) is the third movement of a guitar trio suite commissioned by the Seikei University Guitar Society. Though titled after a song of mourning for the dead, Tetsuo Isono’s performance avoids excessive heaviness, instead enveloping the listener in deep pathos and a gentle warmth.
