The recording includes 14 pieces, many drawn from Thomas Morley’s influential The First Booke of Consort Lessons (1599) and Phillip Rosseter’s Lessons for Consort (1609), as well as other sources including anonymous works and pieces by composers such as William Byrd, Richard Allison, Peter Philips, John Dowland, and Tobias Hume. Some compositions were originally keyboard works adapted for consort, showcasing the versatility and creative arranging of the time.
The album highlights both popular tunes and more complex works, featuring arrangements that range from vibrant dances and variations to solemn pavans. Instruments alternate melodic and harmonic roles, often in antiphonal style. The recording also includes rare pieces reconstructed from incomplete manuscripts and celebrates the interplay of plucked and bowed sounds that defined English consort music.
