The Kroumata Percussion Ensemble

The Kroumata Percussion Ensemble
Four Stockholm percussionists formed Kroumata in 1978 out of a wish to make chamber music rather than wait at the back of the orchestra, and this early disc already captures a group of formidable precision. It opens with two landmarks of the American percussion tradition — John Cage's Second Construction of 1940 for four players and Henry Cowell's Pulse of 1939 for five — before turning to Torbjörn Iwan Lundquist's Sisu, named for the Finnish idea of stubborn endurance and built with exactly that momentum. The collection culminates in Yoshihisa Taïra's Hiérophonie V, nearly twenty minutes in which six players fuse into a single ceremonial voice. Composers went on to write more than 240 works for Kroumata before it disbanded in 2015, and recordings like this one explain their devotion.
