Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin

Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester BerlinThe Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1923 as the first dedicated radio symphony orchestra in Germany. Its chief conductors, among them Eugen Jochum, Sergiu Celibidache, Hermann Abendroth, Rolf Kleinert and Heinz Rögner, and guest conductors such as Otto Klemperer, Bruno Walter and Erich Kleiber moulded the orchestra into an ensemble with a repertoire ranging from pre-classical to modern works; since its inception the orchestra has taken a special interest in contemporary music. Some of the foremost twentieth-century composers either conducted the orchestra themselves or appeared as soloists in their own works, among them Paul Hindemith, Arthur Honegger, Darius Milhaud, Sergei Prokofiev, Richard Strauss, Arnold Schoenberg, Igor Stravinsky, Wladimir Vogel, Kurt Weill and Alexander Zemlinsky or, more recently, Krzysztof Penderecki, Peter Maxwell Davies, Siegfried Matthus and Udo Zimmermann. With the appointment of Marek Janowski as artistic director, the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra has been able to consolidate its position as one of the foremost orchestras in Berlin and one of the finest German radio orchestras. Since 1956 the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra has made guest appearances in more than twenty countries and played at international festivals such as the Festival Septembre Musical Montreux and the Prague Autumn; it has made six visits to Japan and, in 1998, performed for the first time in China.
