Mozart - Flute Quartets
Catalog Number: BIS1044
This album presents Mozart’s beloved flute quartets and concertos, originally composed during his Mannheim and Paris travels of 1777–78. These works were commissioned by the wealthy amateur flautist Ferdinand Dejean, though Mozart's enthusiasm waned due to the constraints of the commission. The album also includes the later Flute Quartet in A major, composed in Vienna in 1786. Performed by flutist Sharon Bezaly and the Salzburger Solisten under Luz Leskowitz, the recording captures Mozart’s elegant style and nuanced humor.
This recording features Mozart’s flute quartets and concertos, composed primarily during his 1777–78 journey through Mannheim and Paris. Commissioned by the wealthy amateur flautist Ferdinand Dejean, Mozart initially agreed to write “three small, easy and short concertinos” and several quartets. However, misunderstanding the scope and limitations of the commission, he only completed two concertos (including the well-known G major, KV313) and three quartets. His disinterest in writing for the flute, which he famously disliked, is apparent in letters to his family. The later Flute Quartet in A major, KV298, composed in Vienna in 1786, brings a lighter, more playful tone, quoting popular melodies of the time.
Performed by world-renowned flutist Sharon Bezaly and the distinguished chamber ensemble Salzburger Solisten, led by violinist Luz Leskowitz, this recording combines historical insight with fresh, expressive interpretation.
