Piano and Guitar

Piano and Guitar
This album presents works for piano and guitar by Alberto Ginastera, Manuel Maria Ponce, and Leo Brouwer, performed by Debora Halász (piano) and Franz Halász (guitar). Alberto Ginastera’s Piano Sonata No. 1 (1952) and Guitar Sonata (1976) are infused with rhythmic vitality, tonal ambiguity, and Argentine folk influences. The Piano Sonata, commissioned for a contemporary music festival, showcases shifting meters and subtle dodecaphonic elements, culminating in a rhythmically intense finale. The Guitar Sonata, written for Carlos Barbosa-Lima, is a substantial and expressive work that explores the instrument’s full range, with movements alternating between the lyrical, percussive, and playful. Manuel Maria Ponce’s Sonata for Guitar and Piano (1931) reflects his neo-romantic style. Originally written for guitar and harpsichord, it is performed here with piano, adding dynamic depth. The sonata blends classical structure with expressive lyricism, particularly in its introspective second movement and conversational finale. Leo Brouwer’s Tres Danzas concertantes, originally composed for guitar and string orchestra and arranged here for guitar and piano, represents an early tonal phase in his output. The work includes a scherzo, a habanera-tinged andantino, and a lively, contrapuntal toccata, all full of rhythmic energy. This recording captures a vibrant cross-section of 20th-century Latin American music, interpreted by two distinguished artists.
