All the Lonely People

All the Lonely People
This album presents five concertos for trombone and orchestra, each offering a distinct musical and emotional character, performed by Christian Lindberg with the Tapiola Sinfonietta under the direction of Osmo Vänskä. Rimsky-Korsakov's Trombone Concerto, originally composed in 1878 for wind orchestra, is compact and features a bold opening, a lyrical middle movement, and a rousing march finale. Henri Tomasi's 1956 concerto contrasts this with French impressionistic color: a virtuosic and nostalgic first movement, a nocturne shaped by blues influences, and a finale driven by South American rhythms. Nino Rota’s concerto from 1968 may initially seem conventional, but subtle orchestration reveals emotional depth. It follows a traditional fast-slow-fast structure, with an Italianate flair and moments of irony. Alfred Schnittke's Dialogue, originally for cello and reworked in collaboration with Lindberg, challenges the performer with complexity and intensity, culminating in a pure, expressive musical statement. The album concludes with Folke Rabe’s All the Lonely People…, a tragicomic work inspired by the Beatles' Eleanor Rigby. It reflects on social isolation, portraying the trombone soloist as an outsider gradually finding acceptance, culminating in a quotation of the Beatles' refrain—an emotional and philosophical finale to this powerful collection.
