Fono Forum: outstanding.
This album presents a rich portrait of the trombone as a solo instrument, featuring concertos by Gordon Jacob, Elgar Howarth, and Derek Bourgeois. Jacob’s concerto, written for the legendary Denis Wick, has become a cornerstone of the English trombone repertoire. Howarth’s long-forgotten work, composed in his youth and rediscovered decades later, blends influences from Stravinsky, Hindemith, and Britten with his own emerging voice. Bourgeois’ concerto, written for the opening of the first international trombone symposium in London, reaches beyond classical circles with vibrant energy and a finale that has been called a “hit.”
At the center is Christian Lindberg, one of the world’s leading trombone soloists, whose pioneering artistry has inspired more than forty composers to write for him. Partnered here with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales conducted by Grant Llewellyn, Lindberg delivers performances that illuminate both the trombone’s lyrical depth and dazzling virtuosity.
