The Sacred Trombone
Catalog Number: BIS488
The Sacred Trombone explores the deep historical connection between the trombone and sacred music, pairing it with organ across reflective works by composers such as Gardner Read, Franz Liszt, Petr Eben, Alfred Schnittke, Jan Sandström, and Anders Hillborg. Trombonist Christian Lindberg and organist Gunnar Idenstam perform pieces ranging from 19th-century chorales to newly commissioned compositions, highlighting the instrument's expressive and meditative power.
Since the 14th century, the trombone has had a close association with church music, often employed in liturgical settings. The Sacred Trombone showcases this heritage through a collection of 19th- and 20th-century works for trombone and organ, performed by Christian Lindberg and Gunnar Idenstam. The program features Gardner Read’s primal Invocation, Liszt’s rarely heard Hosannah based on a chorale, and two Invocations by Petr Eben, shaped by clarity and emotional depth. Alfred Schnittke's Schall und Hall was composed for church acoustics and creates a unique spatial soundscape. Jan Sandström’s Lacrima, Lacrime and Anders Hillborg’s U-Tangia-Na—the latter featuring a hidden Morse code message—push expressive and technical boundaries. Together, these works form a contemplative and powerful tribute to the sacred voice of the trombone.
